Spotlight Destination: Greenland

EXPLORE THE WORLD'S LARGEST ISLAND

Greenland is the world’s largest island and a captivating yacht charter destination in the Arctic for all adventure minded travelers. Live under the northern lights in the winter and the midnight sun in the summer. It is a rugged, mountainous, contrasting land with the enormous Greenland Ice Sheet at its center.

Greenland’s wildlife is rich and extremely diverse: sea eagles, seals, whales, musk oxen, wolves, reindeer and polar bears. Whales can be seen all over Greenland, particularly during the summer months. It is most common to see fin whales, humpback whales and minke whales.

Cruise through breathtaking Greenland Fjords, get right up close to massive glaciers, go ashore and meet the Inuit natives, bathe in geothermal springs, visit the national parks and adorn nature’s artwork with the different designs of icebergs. These are only a few samples of how your luxury yacht charter vacation in Greenland can become a lifetime adventure.

kangerlussuaq

Kangerlussuaq is abundant with wildlife and is Greenland’s only direct route to the ice sheet. The Greenland Ice Cap is a mecca for travelers who wish to see a true wonder of the world. Kangerlussuaq was founded in 1941 when it was opened as a U.S. Air Force base. Americans remained there until 1992. Kangerlussuaq Museum exhibits the town’s history as an American base and afterward.

AASIAAT

Aasiaat welcomes you with the colorful wooden houses. Located at the mouth of Disko Bay, Aasiaat is the ideal spot for kayaking. In the summer, fin whales, humpback whales and minke whales, in addition to the bowhead whale, blue whale and sperm whale, frequent these Greenlandic waters. Here, the sun does not set from the end of May to the end of July.

QEQERTARSUAQ & DISKO BAY

Qeqertarsuaq town on Disko Island has a long and proud whaling tradition and in keeping with that, a multitude of whales can be seen here in the summer. The Lyngmark glacier is the only place in Greenland for summer dog sledding. The experience is best in the evening in the midnight sun, and the couple of hours it take to hike to the top is well worth the effort!

ILULISSAT & JAKOBSHAVN ICE FJORD

The fishing village of Ilulissat perches at the edge of a 40km (25mile) ice fjord that produces 20 million tons of ice per day. Ilulissat’s claim to fame is the icebergs. With 37 miles of icebergs, the Jakobshavn Ice fjord (a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2004) is considered one of the most beautiful places in all of Greenland.

EQIP SERMIA

Eqip Sermia, also known as the Eqi glacier, rewards with breathtaking views of one of the most photographed places in Greenland. The Eqi glacier is one of the most active glaciers in Greenland, and the chances of seeing ice fall from the enormous glacier are really good. The Eqi glacier is not as large as Sermeq Kujalleq in the Ice fjord, but it is more accessible, and one can get closer to it.

UUMMANNAQ AND QILAQITSOQ

Have your camera ready and be out on deck as the ship approaches Uummannaq (which means “heart- like”), named for the heart-shaped mountain that towers over the town. Marvel at the traditional colorful houses perched atop the rugged terrain as you wander through the town.
