After a long transit East, begin exploring the remote and natural San Blas Islands.  Although only a short trip from Panama City, a trip to the San Blas islands will transport you to a time long ago. Ran by the Kuna Indians, the islands are autonomous provinces with minimal interference from the national government. They have maintained their own economic system, language, customs, and culture throughout the years. Each island is ruled by a chief passing down traditional dress, legends, music, and dances to the generations to come. Often, you’ll see the graceful handywork of their wooden canoes and patchwork sails on the water, called “cayucos” in the native language.
