How long have you been a captain and onboard SANAM?

I earned my 3000 GT license in 2002, so I’ve been an active captain for 22 years. I joined SANAM in January 2013, right at the signing of the build contract, and have been with her for 12 years now.

What led you to wanting to become a captain?

My love for the sea has been a part of me since I was seven. After sailing throughout my youth and working as a sailing instructor during my gap year, I realized I wanted to dedicate my life to the ocean. Becoming a captain was a natural progression, allowing me to combine my love of the sea with leadership and responsibility.

Do you think you’ve experienced any extra challenges along the way that maybe a male crew wouldn’t have?

Yes, particularly when balancing my career with motherhood. Managing both was a challenge that required resilience and support. Additionally, overcoming gender bias early in my career was a hurdle, but I’ve seen the industry become more inclusive over time.

What do you love the most about being a captain?

I love creating unforgettable experiences for guests and leading a skilled crew. The opportunity to navigate some of the world’s most beautiful destinations while working with top professionals in the industry is incredibly rewarding

Has the industry changed much since you first started your career?

The yachting industry has evolved significantly since the 90s. Yachts are now larger and more complex, with a greater focus on crew well-being and mental health. The environment has also become more inclusive, with fewer gender divisions.

What is the most positive change?

The most positive change has been the increase in professionalism, with formal training and certifications now a requirement. The introduction of the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) has also improved crew rights, making the industry more secure and inclusive.

What advice do you have for aspiring captains?

Take your time and don’t rush into bigger roles too quickly. It’s important to build experience on smaller boats, understand all departments onboard, and develop the ability to remain calm in challenging situations. These skills will set you up for success when you take command of a larger vessel.
