Royal Huisman epitomizes Dutch maritime craftsmanship with their custom luxury sailing and motor yachts. The shipyard was founded in 1884 by Jan Huisman and is still family-owned and operated. Early on, the yard built small wooden sailing and motor yachts, but in 1954 Royal Huisman switched its focus to steel, and aluminum yachts. With a focus on successful racing sailing yacht production and the custom superyacht market, Royal Huisman found a winning formula. Upon the shipyard’s 100th anniversary in 1984, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands gave Huisman the title “Royal”, and the firm was renamed, Royal Huisman. At this point, the yard was already established in the international racing circuit, building several honor-winning performance yachts such as SAUDADE, FLYER, and FLYER II. The yard builds and refits custom luxury sailing yachts and motor yachts at its shipyard in Vollenhove, Netherlands. Here they have Huisfit, which is the shipyard’s in-house refit and repair division that not only refits Huisman builds but also does builds such as Heesen, Lürssen, and Claasen.

NOTABLE ROYAL HUISMAN BUILDS

The largest Royal Huisman to date is the 266’ sailing yacht SEA EAGLE II. She is the world’s largest aluminum sailing yacht and is currently in the top 10 ranking of the world’s largest sailing yachts. Another notable build is the 260’ sailing yacht ATHENA, which was built in 2004. This triple-masted schooner was built by Jim Clarke, who at the time had a 155’ Huisman being built and decided that he wanted a larger Huisman as well. ATHENA can accommodate 12 guests and has many amenities that other sailing yachts did not at the time. This was a massive feat for the Royal Huisman and established the yard as a megayacht builder.

ROYAL HUISMAN TODAY

Today, Royal Huisman is working on Project 410, a massive 280’ megayacht that will be the world’s largest sloop, and Royal Huisman’s largest build. She will include a massive carbon mast, and a boom and integrated sailing system, which will be designed and produced by Royal Huisman’s sister company, Rondal. Project 410 will be a true sailor’s yacht, which will be ready to sail quickly and capable of sailing fast, in comfort, to make the most of that long waterline. She will be exciting to sail, even in light airs, with an impressive ability to build and increase apparent wind speed.  All in all, Project 410 will be a megayacht equipped to explore the world in a grand fashion. The project is also an eco-friendly one, with recyclability and green energy top of mind when building this yacht.

Another major focus is the Huisfit division, which is a dedicated division for refit, rebuild, and renewal.
